Norwood School
Norwood School's mission is to ensure that each of its students grows intellectually, morally, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, while preparing to function productively and generously in our pluralistic society. Norwood's challenging educational program and broad-based activities are designed to help students experience joy in learning, develop self-confidence, and learn respect for the rights and feelings of others. Embracing diversity is integral to the school's tradition that both recognizes the worth of each member of the community and emphasizes the common values of academic achievement, mutual respect, cooperation and personal responsibility.
All schools share the common goal of opening new doors to the world of learning for their students, and they bear the common responsibility of providing guidelines for exploration and discovery. At Norwood, we are blessed with remarkable resources for accomplishing these tasks. Chief among these resources is a faculty distinguished by its talent, experience and commitment to the education of young people. We take great pride in our teachers' ability to inspire exploration, even as we delight in the successful discoveries of our students.
Since its founding in 1952 under the direction of Frances Brandis Marsh, Norwood has grown and evolved from a co-educational primary school of 40 students connected to an Episcopal parish church into its present configuration as an independent elementary and middle school of over 500 students with no religious affiliation on a beautiful, 40-acre campus. Through years of growth and subsequent changes in leadership, the school has held fast to its founder's original vision of a happy place of learning for children filled with art and music where each child would feel supported and valued. In short, Norwood is a school which seeks to achieve a healthy equilibrium between matters of the mind and matters of the heart, and which embraces both the qualities of constancy and renewal.
